On the way home from school, Augie is making a racket in the backseat.
"Charlie needs to cut his nails," he complains. "He's just growing them out because he wants to be like Hobbes."
This last part he says in an emphatically accusatory tone.
"Too true," says Elliott, staring out the window as we amble down the road.

It is Ethan's thirteenth birthday today and I'm really just amazed. There are lots of thoughts and feelings and then all of the busyness that goes along with a birthday -- grandparents for dinner, a party with family and friends tomorrow.
I want to have a few minutes to think and express how I feel and yet, well, I'm not even exactly sure how I feel. I am excited and melancholy and totally in awe of how time goes by.
Thirteen years ago I was having my first day as a mother. I started to use the word "celebrating," instead of "having" -- and yes it's a wonderful, joyous day. But I'm not sure if describing myself as "celebrating" would strike the right tone. The day you have your first baby, there is a lot of shell-shocked awe, a disbelief mixed with overwhelming joy, a sense of "yes, this is exactly where I need to be." It is wonderful but it is mixed with a wide range of other emotions as well.
The oldest child ushers all those feelings into your heart -- and it is indeed a very special place in your heart.
How do I feel about my boy turning 13? Lucky and happy and blessed to be on this journey with this boy -- and all the boys who followed him.

What a lucky duck to have grandparents close enough, healthy enough to come over for dinner! Oh what some of us wouldn't give for that privilege of sharing our children's milestones with our own parents.
Love the new profile pic!
Rachel, I am so thrilled to have found your blog, and articles on F&F!!!! Boy, I wish we lived near you... We have six young 'uns, the four middles ones are boys. Whenever I would 'complain' about my own 'testosterhome', people who had all boys would tell me I had NOTHING to say because I at least had a girl ;) Still, testosterone does rule the family... anyway, keep those awesome posts a'comin'... you ROCK!!! Blessings, shalimamma from LifeVictorious.com
Well, after thirteen years and more boys following . . . you look FABULOUS!! He's so blessed to have a solid family. Many many happy birthday wishes and prayers for your teen!
My oldest son just celebrated his 13th birthday in August. I know exactly what you mean!! I love ALL my boys equally and with the same passion, but there is something special and apart about that first one. He's turning into a man before my eyes, but the boy is still there (as we were sharing a guffaw in the car this afternoon, having to do with a certain bodily function that all boys find hysterical......)!
OH my goodness, is that Ethan as a baby? He looks EXACTLY like Henry! That's pretty amazing! Happy birthday Ethan...and the beginning of Testosterhome. I can't wait to watch thirteen more years unfold in our house here.

Happy 13th Birthday to Ethan !
Another great post Rachel. My youngest just turned thirteen in August and with that came a whole new host of emotions celebratory and other.
Happy Birthday to Ethan! Oh how the years go by. I think I was in Rome when I heard the news of his birth from Fr. Tim. Can't believe that was 13 years ago.
Happy 13th Birthday to Ethan, and to you 13 years of mothering...it just gets better and better..even with the occasional rough spots~
Wow! Look at you - you have not changed in 13 years. You look so great. I am so jealous and would like to know where you hide your fountain of youth.
Love the new profile pic!
Love the pic of you and Ethan - what a total DOLL!
And, Happy Birthday to Ethan! God bless all of you!
So, as your son get's older, you just look younger!! Congrats to your TEENAGER!!!! Hey, I have one too that just turned 13, actually, he is my one and only. And I am truly enjoying this journey. Peace and blessings to all as you celebrate - :0)
Happy birthday, Elliott!
Happy birthday to your teenager! Wow. Time flies, doesn't it? Even with having other little ones.
Ok, I am commenting on his little outfit. My 14 year old son(now taller than me when his shoes are on) also had an outfit very much like the little blue and gingham outfit your son is wearing. I remember loving it. He cannot believe his own mother would let her son wear little blue and white checks. Have any of your sons second guessed his mother's clothing choices for him? It kind of makes me laugh!
